So The Expanse finished it's first season on SyFy last week, and what a series! Easily my favourite show in the last few years and on it's way to being my favourite Science Fiction series ever!
With a perfect blend of great writing, great source material, amazing cast, big budget effects, sweeping backdrops and epic storytelling; all the pieces fit together to create a sublime series being hailed as "Game of Thrones in space". Some people said they found it slow, well guess what? That's called story telling; people have become so used to constant action and TV to push up your adrenaline that they've forgotton about chracterisation. If a scene is longer than 30 seconds, that's not slow TV, that's TV asking you invest some time initially to get to know these characters inside and out (literally in some cases). Listen to them talking, take in the subtle clues and references to stuff that's already happening, or is going to happen, because the pay off is worth it.
Every details has attention paid to it, no stone is left unturned, and what you have is a thoroughly fulfilling piece of TV. Of course there are fans of the books who aren't keen on some of the changes or how some aspects have been adapted for TV. But that's what happens in cases like this; if you took every scene, character, twist and turn from the book and made a TV carbon copy, then it wont always work. Remember the Game of Thrones fans who didn't like the TV adaptation? Well you can't please everyone, but so far this show has had some of the best reviews of any TV show in recent years.
So it's incredibly disappointing that season 1 only averaged 0.68 million viewers over ten episodes. With other SyFy shows; '12 Monkeys', 'Dark Matter', 'Z Nation', all getting bigger viewers than 'The Expanse', we need to ensure people discover this show.
'The Expanse' was already renewed for a second season late last year, and with other new show 'The Magicians' also renewed for a second season, the competition is high on SyFy.
So, use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc etc to let people know what they're missing.
Remember Game of Thrones was a slow burner, ratings have increased every season since the beginning, with season 2 jumping 65% higher than it's season 1 average.
So, let's list some of the ways you can catch up on The Expanse, and use the hashtag #discoverexpanse to try and keep this going. The more people who discover the show before season 2s debut in 2017 the bigger the chance we have of more people watching this great show.
So, what's The Expanse about? Based on a series of books by James S. A. Corey, The Expanse is set "hundreds of years in the future, humans have colonized the solar system. The U.N. controls Earth. Mars is an independent military power. The planets rely on the resources of the Asteroid Belt, where air and water are more precious than gold. For decades, tensions have been rising between these three places. Earth, Mars and the Belt are now on the brink of war. And all it will take is a single spark."
If that hasn't wet your appetite, then take a look at the official trailer:
